On Friday night and all day Saturday April 6th and 7th Disc Golf enthusiast braved very cold temperatures and rain to help Cullman Caring for kids. The tournament was the idea of Chris Kilgo and a few of his friends. The idea was to raise as much money for Cullman Caring for Kids as possible. The results were awesome in that amount of time and under very, very bad weather conditions they raised over a $1000. If you ask if we know the conditions were bad just look at the picture, that me dressed as an Eskimo. We can't thank the "Flying Squirrels Disc Golf Club" enough. They participates from as far away as Iowa, Tennessee and Florida. They hope to have an annual tournament sanctioned by the Professional Disc Golf Association.
Every year a special time is set aside to honor those children who have been killed by Child Abuse or Neglect. President Reagan during his term in office declared April as Child Abuse Awareness and Prevent Month and it has been observed since. The mission of Cullman Caring for Kids is to do all we possibly can to stop Child Abuse and Neglect.
Every day 5 children are killed in the US by Child Abuse and Neglect, every 6 seconds a child is Abused, one in four girls will be sexually assaulted by age 17 and one in five boys will be sexually abused by age 17. We at Cullman Caring for Kids work on awareness and prevention all year, but especially in April. We are attaching a calendar of events for this month of April 2018. Please feel free to join us at any of the events. Our goal this year is everyone to know that Good Parenting Begins with Education. Please join us in STOPPING CHILD ABUSE in OUR COMMUNITY
The Cullman Lions Club always goes above and beyond. A few years ago the Cullman Lions Club decided to raise money for the Cullman Caring for Kids Food Bank by parking car during Rock the South. Lions Fred Osborne and Dennis Berse spearheaded the effort. With the help of all the Lions Club Members over the years their motto has grown tremendously. As the result of hard work the Lions raised more than they ever have before. The lions Club Charities matched a portion to bring the total for this year to $25,615.07. What a great effort by the Cullman Lions Club and a huge BLESSING for the Cullman Caring for Kids Food Bank. There is no way we can ever express our gratitute for all the hard work and the blessing this will bring to those in need. God Bless the Cullman Lions Club!!
Cullman Primary School just reached their 100 days in school this year and to celebrate they had a challenge for every classroom to collect 100 cans of food for Cullman Caring for Kids Food Bank. Wow, did they reach their goal they collected 1208 lbs. of food during the challenge. This is awesome for more than just the food they collected. It means that these children are learning what it means to give back to the community. What a great project. THANK YOU!!
For the past several years Warehouse Discount Grocery has been selling per packaged bags for $5 and donating all bags sold to Cullman Caring for Kids Food Bank. When a customer paid for the bag it was placed in a bin at the front of the store. When the bin was full they would contact CCK to pickup the bags. Warehouse Discount Grocery has done this food donation program for the past several year. It not only gives each customer the opportunity to help the Food Bank, but the store as well. Each bag weights approximately 5lbs and contains such things as soup, rice or beans, crackers and tuna a very good start to help feed the hungry. The food bank personnel took that start and added more nutritious food until that bags weights approximately 25lbs. We give a big shout out to Warehouse Discount Grocery all three Cullman County stores and their customers who donated 1,192 bags during the holidays. THANK YOU ALL.
There are Special people who really come through when there is a need in our community. One example is MyWay Transportation, their Employees, Drivers and Associates. Because of their very generous donation to the Cullman Caring for Kids Food Bank a lot of children and families will have food to eat this Christmas that they may not have otherwise had. What can be said about heroes we truly have them in our community. To Contact My Way Transportation go to Website WWW.mywaytrans.com or call them at 256-775-1313 and tell them thank you for helping our community. By the way, they are challenging all other transportation companies to met or exceed their donation. Thank You MyWay Transportation.
We were so glad to see Ken Bates from Woodmen of the World this morning. He brought us a donation from Chapter 1881. I have always heard good things about this organization, but we are honored to be the recipient of one of their Civic Projects. We are always in awe of the giving spirit of the Cullman community. When there is a need this community comes through. Again thank you to Ken Bates and Woodmen of the World.
In the month of October, East Elementary School conducted a food drive for Cullman Caring for Kids. This food drive brought in 1,020 pounds of food and just over $1000 in cash. The cash donation will purchase up to 7,000 pounds of food. Cullman Caring for Kids /United Way Food Bank distributes between eight to ten tons of food each month to those in need in the community. The students of East Elementary did an outstanding job and we can't thank Mr. Wiggins and the staff for encouraging their students to give back to the community.
